We began our hike of the Lower Calf Creek Falls right from our campsite at 9:30 am and it seemed we were the first on the trail for that day. I was glad to have begun when it was still not too hot out, although it was still warm enough that we both appreciated the shaded areas. The hike was absolutely beautiful with plenty of brush, high red rock walls and the sound of the water flowing in the creek near us. We covered the 3 miles to the waterfall in just over an hour and I was blown away by the beauty of it. A runner had passed us soon before we reached the falls, so was there when we arrived and appeared to be sketching the waterfall, he ended up taking our photo for me before he left. Luna hates waterfalls, she becomes nervous whenever we are around them, however she still enjoyed the water and the sand near it and had a good play. We spent around an hour at the falls and left as several groups of people started arriving. On the way back we came across quite a number of people and lots of dogs. Usually I see quite a few mutts, but on this trail they were all purebreds other than Luna and one Pit bull type dog that may or may not have been a mix, there was a Cairn Terrier, American Shepherd, 2 separate German Shepherd pups (6 and 4 months), a yellow lab and a Standard Poodle, plus a Vizla at the campground, I may as well have been at some kind of breed show! Upon returning to the campsite after a quick walk back, stopping to admire the pictographs along the way, we headed out to visit the Devil’s Garden. The Devil’s Garden was on my way back to Escalante and down a long dirt road that was quite a lot better than the other GSENM road and much easier to find. We only spent around 45 minutes there at most, it was very cool, but I was planning on driving to Bryce Canyon National Park afterwards and wanted to be sure to get a campsite.
When we arrived in the town of Escalante, I took some time catching up online and looking in to Bryce Canyon, deciding whether or not to visit it as the park is not particularly dog friendly. I found out that the showers at Bryce Canyon are only open through certain times of the year, not including right now, so I chose to find a different campground for the night so I could shower rather than wait 3 or 4 more days until I had shower access. Decision made, I headed off, stopping almost immediately at an RV Park right in the small town that advertised showers. I got my spot and was delighted to find out they have wifi too! So much for me spending all that time using data on a random street a few blocks away. I spent the evening almost getting caught up on my blog, however I didn’t have quite enough battery to get today up until several days later.
A fish hanging out in the shallows.
The rainbow in the falls does not show as well here as it did in person, it was beautiful!
Luna hates waterfalls, so here she was looking beseechingly at the guy taking our photo to please be quick so we could distance ourselves from the large, loud flow of water, I on the other hand was trying to keep my eyes from tearing up as I looked in to the sun.
Here's how Luna would have looked if she kept her one floppy ear, happy pup!
These were way across the canyon and high up on some canyon walls. Life size portraits.
A viewpoint. The road visible in the photo was the one I travelled between Lower Calf Creek Falls and Devil's Garden.
The Devil's Garden.
Goblins
Luna bolted down structure we were on and then dropped down immediately to lay in the shade, looking like she'd been there for a long while, what a character!
"Oh hey, where you been?"
