I took an extremely lazy morning, sleeping late, then reading for a long time over breakfast. Around 11:30 am I decided to head out to an area with service for a little while before heading to my 1:00 pm tour at Best Friends Animal Society. I was there very early of course and just sat in the sun waiting until I got up the nerve to go near the group of people my age who were there to volunteer. They asked to meet Luna and it was nice to talk with them for a few minutes before I was called over to begin the tour. There were 5 adults, 3 kids and a baby on my tour and we began by watching a 20 minute, feel good video about the sanctuary. After the video, we all got in a van, Luna immediately jumping up on the seat next to me, I looked up at the tour guide and he told me she could be wherever she wanted to be, so that was settled. Luna was a little nervous being on the bus and even more nervous when there were dogs and cats outside the bus, but did fairly well. She and I had to miss out on 15 minutes in the dog area and 10 minutes in the cat area, waiting in the bus for the others, but it was still a good tour. We drove past the horse pastures, pig pens, dog areas, cat area, bird facility, vet clinic, wildlife sanctuary and a couple of pet cemeteries while learning about the rescue. Afterwards, thanks to a woman asking about horse tours, I was able to participate in a tour of the horse, pig and goat areas with just her and I on the tour. Most of the horses were seniors, some with pretty bad sway backs, all looked really well cared for and happy, although some of the feet looked like they could use a much better trim job. A woman was doing some Parelli Natural Horsemanship with one horse when we walked by, they work hard to make sure all the animals are mentally stimulated and prepared for adoption, although many will live out their lives at the sanctuary. One horse was perhaps 2 years old and had been born wild, then grew up as a house pet, bottle fed as well, of course he was a terror, so they, along with a donkey and a horse were working on his manners. The pot belly pigs were absolutely adorable, there were several close to a year old, so quite small still and they came running to the fence to try and see us, making all manner of cute noises. I was very glad to be able to get a closer look at the spacious horse area, I had been disappointed when the tours hadn’t led us through that part. Luna and I collected our gift bag with sanctuary magazines and such from the sanctuary, then left, heading to McDonald’s to use their free wifi and begin to get updated on the blog.
This photo was technically taken the morning of March 6, but I was just uploading iPhone photos as that is all I took from today and I couldn't resist adding this one. Luna is quite comfortable with sleeping in the car.
This one is from March 8th, Luna likes checking out the views sometimes while the curtains are still up, it is too bad her tail sticking out the other side doesn't show well.
Just riding on the bus with my pal.
The bus is boring apparently.
What the facilities looked like, this was the cat area.
I love this despite the crappy quality and lighting, Luna sporting her (my) tour sticker on the bus as we tour Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
