Day 20 - Yuma - Organ Pipe National Monument

The drive today was extremely hot, the temperature hovered around 30-degrees-celsius all day and even with the windows fully down it was almost unbearable. I pulled over for awhile at one point for Luna to cool off as she was panting so hard. She was also having a bit of a panic attack as we had gone through a large puddle much too fast due to the suddenness of it appearing in a dip, scaring both of us; she immediately scrambled trying to get on to my lap and I pulled over to let her off her seatbelt and give her the comfort she needed. Going over a cattle grate (which we have several times before without issue) sent her over the edge again and she was in total freak-out mode, so some time out of the car helped with that. We continued through the land of plentiful RV Resorts and border patrol check stops and finally arrived at Organ Pipe National Monument. With how sweltering it was I had considered turning back to head more up North a few times, but am thankful I continued as this place is breathtakingly beautiful.

We spent some time walking the Campground Perimeter Trail and plan to do the longer dog-friendly trail tomorrow morning. A little hummingbird flew within a few feet up us and there are many birds nesting in the cacti. We met our campsite neighbour, Mary, an older woman that doesn’t have a home base, she just travels all over and camps, how cool is that? I watched a spectacular sunset with Luna standing patiently at my side or waiting as I took photos. We then went to a talk on the night sky; I learned a lot and was fascinated by the Orion Theory on how the Great Pyramids and Orion's belt align. Rather than making me feel absolutely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, the presentation made me feel very fortunate to be alive in this incredible universe. Luna came to the presentation with me of course and after the initial quiet woofing or growling when people appeared out of the darkness, she settled down at my feet, even spreading out on her side for a nap. The large crowd of us at the talk were given the opportunity to look through a couple telescopes, I looked through one and then left as Luna was going over threshold with all the dark, looming outlines of people crowding her. I did some star-gazing for awhile, admiring the milky way and the endless amount of stars that are visible here. I took out my camera and tripod and practiced night shots with little success, apart from learning more about using my camera at night. I could have stayed up all night looking at that beautiful sky and kept peaking at it as I tried to get to sleep.
