Day 4 - Wells, Nevada - Carson City
The number of dead rabbits strewn across the road for the first 20 miles leaving Wells was truly remarkable. The crows and magpies seemed absolutely giddy about this fact and were having a feast that was regularly interrupted by vehicles careening past at 80 miles/hour, fortunately they were far more expert at dodging cars than the poor rabbits. What was also incredible was how much the scenery changed throughout the drive, I have found this to be the case every day so far, but today in particular. We began our day in a tiny mountain town, proceeded through fields with tumble weeds blowing every which way, drove through a desert landscape with no snow in sight, then back in to mountains with several feet of snow only minutes from the desert. We drove in to South Lake Tahoe and I immediately began looking for a place to stay, to no avail. I did stop at one point to walk out on the ice and watch some of the sunset. Lake Tahoe is incredibly beautiful but so crowded, there were people and cars everywhere. I went to several hotels I knew were pet friendly and they were all full and no one seemed to know any other hotels that allowed pets or of any open campgrounds. Very disheartened for having tacked on several hours to a long day of driving, I drove the 40 minutes back to Carson City and was so thankful to find a motel to spend the night. The silver lining of the evening is that I did get a photo of Luna at Lake Tahoe that I love, here it is.
